There was a time when dining in a French restaurant was a formal, perhaps even stuffy affair. The food may have been excellent, the service highly attentive (if bordering on intimidating), and the wine list impressive, but it may not have been a particularly relaxed evening out. All that has changed since Dover Street Restaurant & Jazz Bar became known as a great French restaurant in London as well as a great jazz venue. Many know Dover Street as one of the best places to see live jazz in London, thanks to its nightly programme of some of the best Jazz, Swing, Latin, Soul and Funk bands on offer in the capital. Some know it as a great place to spot celebrities: jazz fans can mingle at the bar with the likes of model Caprice and singer Mica Paris. But more and more people are going to Dover Street for the fantastic French/Mediterranean cuisine that is available at surprisingly affordable prices. The ambience of the restaurant lends itself to being a great place for corporate events, while its West End location and late opening times make it a perfect pre theatre restaurant. The Dover Street menu is a tantalizing mix of simple, traditional, classic and modern dishes with a Mediterranean flavour and made with French flair. Typical fare includes poached haddock served on a bed of creamed potato with saffron and mussel cream topped with a poached egg, medallions of Maine lobster and sautéed fillet of pork. The wine list is as diverse and expertly picked as you would expect from a Mayfair restaurant, offering excellent wines from both the new and the old world. The standards of the food served at Dover Street, and the service provided, is to very high standards, but there is no stuffy atmosphere here. The restaurant has managed to strike a great balance between a stylish, upmarket French restaurant and a great place to relax and enjoy live music; in effect totally avoiding the intimidatingly formal dining experience. With last orders in the kitchen taken at a very civilised 2am and the restaurant closing at 3am, the dining experience can go hand in hand with the listening experience, all through the night. The overall experience of combining a great French restaurant with one of the most popular late night jazz venues in the capital is tangible enough to be named. The Dover Street Experience sums up the unique mix that the restaurant/bar/venue offers: a stylish place to dine, a cool place to hang out at the bar, and a jumping place to listen to some of the best live jazz.
